Twinja Book Reviews 3rd Annual Diversity Month Day Twenty-Six : Interview with @rebekahwsm + month long #giveaway

We're on our last day for our annual Diversity Month event!

We had fun, did you?
We'll wrap things up tomorrow when we announce the winners, but also give a bunch of book recs(from us, as well as our guests this month)but today we host our final guest.

Interestingly enough, while we've written and published a YA SFF novel this year, we also published a NA Contemporary Romance as well. It's forced us to break our of our niche and connect and read all different types of stories in Romance, and to be honest, we haven't found an author quite like our next guest.

What we like about her is how inclusive her romance has been. Disability tends to be rare in Romance unless it's a plot point, as well as LGBTQIAP narratives that aren't M/M.

It's what we've liked so much about the work we've been exposed to so far, so it was a delight to have secure her as the final guest on our blog for the event =D

You can even win three of her books!

Twinja Book Reviews Annual Diversity Month Event Day Twenty-Six:

Author Rebekah Weatherspoon

So we've read a few books so we already know you, but for those first tuning in, why don't you introduce yourself!

Hey! I'm Rebekah. I write paranormal and contemporary erotic romance. I like to bounce between New Adult and Adult. Everything I write has a touch of humor to it.

What can you tell us about your journey being an author?

I started out writing fanfiction, then friends and family encouraged me to try my hand at writing my own stories. It snowballed from there.

What can you tell us about your experience growing up?

I'm an overweight black girl who was raised in a mostly white town in New Hampshire. It was pretty clear that I was differently. Luckily my parents are supportive and I had a lot of great friends with caring parents that looked out for me.

What would you tell your teenage self that you wish you knew now about your growth?

Don't worry. Everything is going to work out. Also, learn how to do your own hair and make-up. It's cheaper that way.

Do you feel well represented in books and/or media?

No, but better than some groups. US media massively fails all women of color, especially queer/disabled women, but there are more black women in movies and on TV than other groups who aren’t represented at all. I would love to see more Asian women and Latina represented.

How can we make the conversation about diversity where it needs to be?

I think there needs to more frank conversations about discrimination. No one wants to own up to their own failings, but until people are honest with themselves, change will be difficult.

What has been your favorite character to create and why?

Oh this is tough. I love Keira from SATED. She's a sweetheart and a big dork like me. I didn't try to make her cool or sexy. She was just herself and that ended up being perfectly cool and sexy all on its own.

Which fictional world would you want to live in and why?

I'm not sure which one, but I'd like to live in a musical. I need more spontaneous song and dance in my life.

Who is your favorite Book Bae?

Jamie Fraser. We're a lot of books into the Outlander Series and he has yet to let me down.

What is the book that have the biggest impact on you?

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I quit a horrible soul sucking job over that book.

What type of advice can you give to those starting out?

Don't give up. To become a writer you have to finish that book first book. So finish that book then write another one.

Finally, where can folks go for updates, and to learn more about your projects going on?

Twitter! I'm on twitter all the dang time. You can find me at @rebekahwsm.

You can find all of my books at www.rebekahweatherspoon.com

Rebekah Weatherspoon is from Southern New Hampshire and now lives in Southern California with her favorite human and their two feline children. She writes adult and new adult romance, both contemporary and paranormal.
